Spreading the news about an apparently normal coin selling for $500,000 will get individuals digging into their loose change drawers.
Several years ago, a 1975 “No-S” Proof Roosevelt dime sold for $456,000.
The Coin World website says Heritage Auctions sold the lucky cent on Sept. 6, 2019. Eight years had passed since its last auction. Five days later, the buyers sold it again for $516,000, a record, to a Roosevelt dime collector.
Before searching for a 1975 dime, remember that the odds are 1 in 1.4 million.
Several factors make it valuable. The moniker comes from its lack of a “S” above 1975, indicating an incorrect coin.
Second, the error may have been deliberate, affecting only a few dimes.
The U.S. Mint created over 2.8 million Proof sets in 1975, but just two “No S” Roosevelt dimes have been found. This is when things become tricky.
Coin World says the 1975 No-S Roosevelt dime is “chronologically flanked” by three other No-S Proof coins from the same era.
