Fried green tomatoes are a Southern classic, loved for their crispy exterior and tangy, tender interior. Traditionally deep-fried, this dish gets a healthier makeover by using an air fryer, which delivers the same satisfying crunch with much less oil.
These Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes are perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or even as a sandwich topping. The slight tartness of the green tomatoes pairs wonderfully with a crispy cornmeal coating, making each bite a delicious contrast of flavors and textures.
Ingredient – 3-4 medium green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch thick round – 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or a gluten-free alternative) – 1/2 teaspoon salt – 1/4 teaspoon black pepper – 2 large eggs, beaten (or plant-based milk for a vegan option)
– 1/2 cup cornmeal – 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs) – 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika – 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder – Cooking spray or olive oil
Instruction 1. Prepare the Tomatoes:Wash and slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
Set Up a Dredging Station: – In one shallow bowl, mix the flour with salt and pepper. – In a second bowl, beat the eggs. – In a third bowl, combine the cornmeal, panko breadcrumbs, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
Coat the Tomatoes: – Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. – Dip the floured tomato slice into the beaten eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated. – Finally, press the tomato slice into the cornmeal and panko mixture, covering both sides well.
Air Fry the Tomatoes: – Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with olive oil. – Arrange the coated tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook in batches to avoid overcrowding.
