America introduced its first currency when it was a baby learning to walk and set its financial infrastructure. These included the 25-cent quarter, still used today.
This rare San Francisco coin is the 1901 S Barber quarter. From the expensive Barber series, it's mostly silver and features a Liberty picture encircled by 13 stars. There were 72,664 made, and even in average condition, they retail for $20,000–$50,000.
Liberty was still on everyone's mind in 1804, 21 years after the American Revolution and the birth of American financial institutions. Early American coins, especially in good condition, are rare. The 1804 Draped Bust quarter consistently sells for hundreds of thousands in good condition.
Carson City, Nevada, no longer has a U.S. mint, hence a CC coin is rare. One of the best Carson City coins is the 1873 Liberty Seated quarter. Since these were scarce and struck with a single die (an impressive feat for the period), check for two arrows printed alongside the date on the bottom of the front.
The 1870 Reconstruction Era Liberty Seated quarter is uncommon, with only 8,340 manufactured. Made almost entirely of silver, these are virtually always patinated.
